The Snowy Winter of 2013 Has a Great Start

I am still not feeling well so I have not been able to get out to snowshoe or ski.  I am not happy about it since the snow is incredible.  I have around three feet of snow in my yard, which is more than we have had in mid-December for many years.

I decided to check the internet to see if I could find graphics to document the snow depth difference from this year to past years.  For reference, the bright green indicates 36 inches or more.  The fuchsia pink represent 27-33 inches and dark red represent 33 to 36 inches.  As you can see below, Grand Marais is in the area with bright green this year.  The maps that follow for December 16th in the past couple years show that there was almost no snow in the Grand Marais area.

The national map shows a similar trend of more snow this year as compared to the last two years.

The tendency toward global climate change has also affected other areas of the world.  For the first time in 112 years, snow fell in Egypt as well as other countries in the eastern Mediterranean region a few days ago.
